The flute is a compact instrument comprised of three pieces: a head joint, body and foot joint.   The greatest possible damage is caused by grabbing the keys hard during assembly.  When assembling, hold it where there are the least amount of keys.

To get a nice tone say "dim poo."  Make sure the flute is centered at the bottom or your lip.  Relax your upper lip.  It compares with blowing across a glass bottle to get a sound or cooling soup.  The sound of a new flautist is usually very airy or windy. If possible, narrow the air stream.  Practice whistling.

Posture

Make sure you are sitting up on the edge of the chair, feet flat on the floor, head in a normal resting position, and bring the instrument to you.  The flute sounds best when it is straight out to the side, not sagging downward.

First Flute?

An ancient bone flute segment, estimated at about 43,ooo up to 82,ooo years old, was found by Dr. Ivan Turk, a paleontologist at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences in Ljubljana.  It's the first flute ever to be associated with Neanderthals and its confirmed age makes it the oldest known musical instrument.
